Pergolas go back to early Roman times, originally as utilitarian supports for vines. At one time quite elaborate architectural structures for large landscaped grounds, these days pergolas and arbours are more likely to be basic outdoor rooms, using climbing plants or other covering to provide shade for lunch or just sitting about.

It is remarkable how effective a pergola can be on a hot day, and of course it is a far more elegant and environmentally-sensitive solution than an electric-powered stripy awning or a PVC conservatory.

My pergolas and gloriettes are adapted to the individual needs of the house or garden to enable all shutters and windows to be opened. They are designed to provide a dappled or deep shade from the plant covering in the summer, but also to allow light back in when the leaves have died back in winter, when the simple and elegant metal structure will still complement its parent building.

As well as pergolas I can turn my hand to gazebos, tonnelles, arches, trellises, obelisks and pylons for plant-climbing, and all manner of garden structures.
