Newsletter No. 94 - December 2009
This month begins with a guest night, as we finished November with a singers & musicians night. The proprietors of the New Beehive Inn kindly welcomed us for that one. Many thanks to them and to everyone who was there to perform and/or listen. December promises quality and variety, with red being the predominant colour. A Happy Christmas and New Year to all!
3rd December Gwyneth Keen & Scarlett Bazaar. If you came to see charismatic Welsh band Celtish at the Topic last year you will certainly remember stunning vocalist Gwyneth Keen, a talented and powerful singer hailing from the mountains of North Wales. Her repertoire is extremely varied, ranging from traditional songs in both Welsh and English, songs from the pens of artists such as Natalie Merchant and Nick Drake, and songs she has written herself. Accompanying Gwyneth will be Becky Dellow on Electric Fiddle/vocals and Elizabeth Casey on piano. £5/£6
10th December George Papavgeris. "The best thing to happen to UK song writing for many a year" says Harvey Andrews of this prolific, personable and compelling songwriter who sings his unique songs with clarity and passion. George enthralled the Topic audience at his last visit in 2007 so we're pleased to be having him back again. "Few have written so many songs that demand your full attention and then insist, in the finest of ways, on staying with you forever" - Graham Searle. £5/£6
17th December Scarlet Heights (sort of) - Pat, Nigel & Stuart, all familiar to regular Topic-goers and Bradford music lovers in general, get together once again to finish off the year for us. Great repertoire expertly performed, and there's sure to be some local humour and banter going on. To add to the merriment, there will be a visit from Holbeck Moor Mummers, raising charity funds, so hopefully you'll have something in your purse or wallet to help pay the doctor's bill, as well as for the usual raffle which helps to support the club. A popular night this so come early if you can. £5/£6
24th December Singers & Musicians. What better way to spend Christmas eve: have a break from the seasonal trappings and trimmings and return home refreshed in spirit, ready for the festive day.
And coming later...
January: Paula Ryan, Sarah Dean, Brian Peters, Fiona Katie Roberts
February: Ray Hearne, Tom Leary & PJ Wright, Zoox
More details in the next newsletter
Attention!..Attention! - You might be under the impression that Paul O'Brien is to be the guest on February 11th, as has been advertised in some places. Unfortunately he's unable to make it..... BUT the good news is we now have Ray Hearne coming on that date. The Topic website will tell you more.
Hope to see you sometime at the Topic. Non-members are welcome, but if you would like to join you may do so any Thursday evening at the club. The annual membership fee is just £5. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket price shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to. A reminder to current members: your membership runs until 31st December, so it will soon be time to renew! You may do this when you next attend the club in the New Year.
The Topic now has Myspace (www.myspace.com/topicfolkclub) and Facebook pages. Thanks to Jimmy & Val, also known as Jiva, for setting up the Myspace and to Joe Grint for taking it over and maintaining it, as well as setting up the Facebook account (search for "Topic Fc" on Facebook and you should find it).
The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB. 8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm)
Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please get there by 8.15pm if you'd like a slot - it helps the MC to plan the evening.
