Hello all, 

What a summer it's turning out to be! The days may be hot, but come down to Glyde House on Thursday evenings where you'll find some cool music.

5th July : Roger Sutcliffe.  
This is Roger’s 55th year of playing at the Topic: there is very little we can say about him that his army of admirers don’t already know. But for any newcomers to the world of acoustic music Roger stands on his own as ragtime picker extraordinaire, blues supremo, and singer of songs of those genres. There are invariably a number of guitarists in his audience who have learned their craft first hand from Roger, so whether you pick, play or just listen, get down early for another packed night.

12th July   : Singers & Musicians: NOTE 2ND THURSDAY THIS MONTH ONLY

19th July :The Quiggs.
The Quiggs are the new husband and wife duo that has emerged on to the Scottish folk scene. Stephen Quigg is a long established folksinger and former member of the legendary band The McCalmans and Pernille Quigg, originally from Denmark, is a folksinger and songwriter. Stephen and Pernille share a common feeling for the folk tradition and both know a good song when they hear one. 

A concert with The Quiggs is a chance to hear folksongs in their simple yet highly expressive form, with beautiful harmonies and songs that seek the audience’s participation.   A Topic debut.

26th July : Steve Dan Mills
American singer songwriter Steve Dan Mills was the co-founder of Speed Limit 35, one of the first folk rock bands in the American South. He has been enjoying a solo career since the mid 70's and has performed at the Sark Folk Festival, Cornwall Folk Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, London Folk Festival, Belfast Nashville Songwriter's Festival and the UK's Top Folk and Acoustic Clubs.  His music has been described as "the real thing, sensitive, moving, cathartic and healing." He couples his very powerful vocals with acoustic guitar and harmonica. His masterful story telling, based on his rich and challenging life experiences, lays the groundwork for each song in a most engaging manner.

Steve has recently moved to London and has begun performing in folk clubs throughout the UK. 

NON-TOPIC EVENTS

THE BRIAN LAWTON LEGACY PROJECT.

As mentioned in recent newsletters, this is an ongoing project during the next 12 months concerning photographs taken by Brian Lawton which cover much of the history of folk music and folk festivals in West Yorkshire. It’swell worth visiting the website http://www.brianlawtonproject.org.uk, to which new material is being added on a regular basis.

IMPORTANT: THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING  - RELENTLESS MONTHLY REMINDER: The change is looming....

Having considered the response to the proposal for earlier start/finish times, the committee has decided to implement a starting time for guest nights of 8 pm to finish at 10.30 pm, starting in September 2018.

USUAL STUFF

MEMBERSHIP: If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk club it still only costs only £5.00 for the year. Membership runs from 1st January and entitles you the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter  as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to. You can join or renew your membership on any club night.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at Glyde House, Glydegate, Little Horton Lane  BD5 0BQ, 8.30 pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights normally start at 8.15 pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half, though may be limited when we have a booked support act - please check. Please try to get there by 8.15 pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
