Topic Newsletter No 42 June 2005
Right, we are into the summer quarter, but we still have a full programme of class acts at the Topic Folk Club.
June 9 Jez Lowe
Quick, or you‘ll miss him. One of the most accomplished, poignant and witty songwriters currently active on the folk scene, he is a must-see/hear. His songs are based on/in his native north-east, but have a universal application. Really, there‘s not much more I can say: if you know Jez you'll know anyway; and if you don't - well, come and find out! We are hoping for a good night, so do get down early. Not least because we also have a class act in Darren Poyzer, one of Manchester's finest, and a very individual talent in his own right, who is coming over to provide Featured Support.
June 16 Soundsphere
A four-piece a capella (apart from the odd percussion) group based in York, but with a touring pedigree that includes Edinburgh, Germany and the USA. "They are nothing if not eclectic: they do songs from all over the world, with light percussion to accompany part songs, rounds (very clever though), different languages, rhythms, jokey, sensible you name it. Loads of harmonies on the go and four German songs, all different, that they work up to singing all at the same time - how they do that I do not know. Will be a great evening! Can't recommend them highly enough" Fox News. No Featured Support booked (so far), so plenty of opportunity for floor singers this week.
June 23 Tom and Barbara Brown
Though they specialise in songs from the West Country, their repertoire extends over a huge range of traditional and even some modern songs. Barbara's voice is accompanied by Tom, who also plays guitar, mandola, concertina and melodeon. For those who like to know these things, Tom was a one-time Regional Development Officer for EFDSS, and is also an occasional dance caller. This is not an evening just for the traditional purists: there'l be plenty for everyone: including floor singers.
June 30 Janet Wood and Friendly Visit
Another in our highly-popular Double Header series, which this time gives an opportunity for two well-established local acts to spread their wings a bit. Janet did a Featured Support slot for us in July 2004: and impressed us with her clever and accomplished songs with a sharp observational edge, her more than competent guitar, and big delivery. Friendly are well known in the locality: a multi-instrumental three-piece ensemble based in Otley (who did a Featured Support slot back in November 2003). Expect an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary songs, accompanied by guitars, whistles, harmonicas, dulcimers, fiddles, mandolins and melodeons (well, at least one of each. Probably.)

July 7 Roger Sutcliffe. His early-July slot is so regular, you can set your body clock by it.
July 14 Singaround on the theme of France / Europe. Referenda: Hey, Non, Nee, Non, Nee, No.
July 21 The Hall Brothers + Hannah and Clair. Great entertainment; and music too.
July 28 Bruce Baillie & Tony Taffinder and Karen & Colin Thompson. A double header to round off the season.
August is all Singers and Musicians; but September 1 sees us straight back in with Jeff Warner (USA), followed by Kirsty McGee and Mat Martin; Magna Carta, cloudstreet (Aus), Dave Gibb (Sco), Brian Peters, the Bisserov Sisters (Bul), Winter Wilson - oh, it goes on and on.
See you all some Thursday at the Melborn (a real ale pub) at one of the above events. 8.30 start. Be there by then if you want to perform a floor spot, which are available every night. No smoking in the club room.

Just a short reminder of the next few weeks. I know the evenings are light and warm; but our artist-friends deserve our support and we have some great music on offer

Who else but the evergreen bluesman, whose regularity in the early July slot is a matter of Topic legend? Last year he regaled us with a historical overview of his personal musical development; fascinating it was too and we couldn't get him off the stage till gone midnight. Of course, Roger needs no introduction, so
July 14 Singaround
Another opportunity for our multi-talented members, friends and guests to gather and amuse ourselves and others in a more relaxed atmosphere than a formal floorspot. The theme is France (as it is Bastille Day, I fancy); or all of continental Europe if France is too limiting. Though it'll be a first if someone finds themselves constrained by the official theme.
July 21 The Hall Brothers + Hannah and Clair
Great entertainment, music and even choreography.
