TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At Glyde House, Glydegate, Bradford BD5 0BQ

Newsletter No 162 - December 2015

Hello all,

Well, 2015 has nearly gone, time for the mad Christmas rush. Get away from it all and chill out at Glyde House on Thursday nights. No late night shopping, endless queues, aching feet here, just:

3rd December Singers and musicians
Free entry (8.00 pm start to incorporate the club's AGM beforehand)

10th December: Luc McNally and Eddie Seaman.
Luc McNally is a Glasgow-based guitarist and accordion player originally from the North East of England. He plays with Barluath (who have been guests at the Topic) , The Quality Ceilidh Band and has toured with Jim Jam Ceilidh band. He has appeared at numerous festivals in the UK as well as Germany, Sweden and Finland.

Luc’s background in traditional music comes from many influences. He was brought up on the music of Scotland, Ireland and Northumberland and often sang in choirs at school. At the age of 14 he gained a place in the Folkestra youth band, based at The Sage Gateshead and under the guidance of Kathryn Tickell, Ian Stephenson, Amy Thatcher and Shona Kipling he gained a diverse repertoire of tunes and songs. As part of Folkestra he had the opportunity to perform in Hall One of the Sage, supporting Sting, and also at the BT River of Music Festival which preceded the London 2012 Olympics. He has since progressed to study guitar and button accordion at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Kevin MacKenzie and Alan Costello.

Luc McNally will be joined by Eddie Seaman, also from the band Barluath, playing pipes, whistles and bouzouki.

Support Act: Tim Moon, a very well-known local singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, performance poet and actor. And radio presenter with BCB. £6/£5 - what a snip!

17th December: Topic Christmas Party.
An evening of seasonal merriment with no guest as such but a few surprises from our regulars, perhaps a mince pie or two, certainly the Holbeck Moor Mummers. And hopefully a good crowd.... Free entry.

24th December: club closed - Christmas Eve

31st December: club closed - New Year's Eve

TOPIC NEWS

One more plug for the AGM which will precede the Singers and Musicians night on 3rd December. This vaguely tedious procedure has to be gone through each year. hopefully it will not detain us long, but we need a few people to come along for constitutionally correctness. Also if there is anyone willing to stand for the committee, don't hold back. It's not too demanding, about 4 fairly pleasant meetings per year and the satisfaction of helping to bring the best in acoustic music to our vibrant city.

Don't forget the Topic song project for next year's anniversary - see recent newsletters for details.

Travelling to the Topic, a reminder.

We have been informed by a kindly club member of new bus times which may be helpful to those who use public transport to get to the club. Or who would like to leave the car at home!

From 6th November the last bus to Manningham, Frizinghall, Saltaire, Bingley, Crossflatts, Keighley every night will be 23.45 (except Fridays and Saturdays when it will be 00.15)

The last bus now from Leeds to Keighley via Shipley is now 23.41 from the Headrow and by the rail station.

Other news:

For those of you who may be interested Keighley Film Club will be showing the film Danny Collins at Keighley Picture House on Sunday 13th December at 6 pm (doors open 5.30 pm). As you probably know, this film is based on local folk singer and friend of the Topic Steve Tilston's story about a letter John Lennon wrote to him but which he didn't receive for many years.

For more information call Bob on 07794 371160 or Fiona on 07582 423627

Usual stuff

For performers who may be thinking of approaching the club for a booking, please note that the bookings organiser is Sue Gaffney, email address : sue.gaffney@btinternet.com

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at Glyde House, Glydegate, Little Horton Lane, BD5 0BQ 8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights normally start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15 pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
