TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX - a wheelchair-friendly venue

Newsletter No. 102 - September 2010

Welcome to the Topic's Autumn Season. This coming month is packed with talent you won't want to miss. Perhaps September will be your first visit to the Topic, at least in its current venue. We hope you will be impressed and will want to come again and again. Those of you who already visit regularly, thank you for your continued support.

2nd September - Steve Tilston
This will be a popular night, so come down early. Steve celebrates 40 years in the music business this year. He is one of this country‚s finest song writers with many of his songs considered modern folk-song classics and have been covered by the likes of Fairport Convention, Dolores Keane, John Wright and others. He‚s also renowned for the way he takes a favourite traditional „old chestnut‰ and makes it his own. He's a greatly celebrated artist in Britain and abroad, winning accolades in Europe, Australia and the USA. Writer of the classic songs Slipjigs and Reels, The Naked Highwayman and Here‚s to Tom Paine, he's also a superb guitar player. £5/£6

9th September - Singers & Musicians
Everyone welcome to come along and take a turn to sing, play (or just listen) in an informal and supportive atmosphere. Free entry and raffle.

16th September - Edwina Hayes
You may have seen Edwina when she performed locally at one of the Raggalds Acoustic series of concerts some months ago to a very appreciative audience. It was clear that she in turn greatly appreciated each member of her audience as she chatted companionably between numbers. She has been described by Nanci Griffith as having „The Sweetest Voice in England‰: Nanci has in fact covered one of Edwina's songs, Pour Me a Drink. Edwina's version of Feels Like Home was featured in the major motion picture My Sister's Keeper. Touring the folk and acoustic circuits extensively, Edwina spends most of her time on the road performing her songs to an ever-increasing audience of fans. Her first appearance at the Topic: definitely something to look forward to. £5/£6

23rd September - Sarah McQuaid
Renowned for her warm, engaging stage presence, Sarah McQuaid is a versatile and beguiling performer. In addition to her own elegantly crafted originals, she interprets traditional Irish and Appalachian folk songs, Elizabethan ballads, 1930s jazz numbers, surprise covers and lively guitar instrumentals with panache and poignance. If you are a guitarist you may be familiar with The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book of which Sarah McQuaid is the author. If you enjoy singing, have a look at http://www.sarahmcquaid.com where you will find a link to download the music for a for 6 part canon written by Sarah, which she invites audiences at her concerts to join her in singing. Something a bit different. £5/£6

30th September - John Tams & Barry Coope.
These very popular high-profile guests were winners of Duo of the Year in 2008. John was also 2006 Folk Singer of the Year and now has six BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, two Honorary Doctorates and a Sony Gold Award. Barry is also well-known as one third of prestigious á capella group, Coope, Boyes and Simpson. Advance tickets are on sale. Get yours now while there's still time! You can buy them any Thursday at the Club, or email rahel@blueyonder.co.uk for details of how to order by post. Price: £9 members/£10 non-members.

7th October - Tich Frier
Known and loved by many Bradfordians, Tich Frier returns with his varied repertoire ranging through traditional and modern Scottish songs, Burns, his own compositions, hilarious parodies and music hall songs to contemporary classics all linked together with his inventive off-the-cuff stories.Tich has also worked regularly on TV and radio (tracks from his albums have received airplay on national and local radio stations) and appeared many times at the world famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Well summed up in Folk Roundabout magazine: "A tremendously gifted and oft-welcomed back performer......Tich's live performances are always superbly enjoyable and involving‰. So come on down! £5/£6

And coming later...

October: Suntrap, Lynne Heraud & Pat Turner
