Newsletter No 271 - January 2025 Hello everyone and a Happy New Year from the Topic to one and all. Firstly, just in case your eyes glazed over before reaching the item about our price changes which was near the bottom of the last newsletter, I'll remind you that our prices are changing from the beginning of the year as follows: The cost of entry on guest nights for Members will remain at £6.00 However, the cost of entry on guest nights for Non-members will rise to £9.00 The cost of annual membership will rise to £10.00 Cost of entry on singers/musicians nights remains at £1 I won't repeat here the rather lengthy background as to how his decision was reached: if you would like further details, please refer to the previous newsletter, or you can email me for more information. Now here's what we have for you as the year begins: 2nd January Singers & Musicians 9th January Hall Brothers and John Carey The Hall Brothers & John Carey have played their own brand of acoustic folk rock for over 30 years now and their blend of sibling harmonies, ‘seriously nifty’ guitar-playing, heartfelt songs and flying fiddle instrumentals is guaranteed to delight any audience. Duncan Hall is a brilliant finger-style guitarist, emotive vocalist and writer of literate songs. Nick Hall is one half of Plumhall and has honed his singing, songwriting and guitar playing skills while performing with the likes of Magna Carta, Ian Prowse, Al Stewart and Fairport Convention. John Carey has also been a member of Magna Carta and brings his instantly recognisable violin sound and spirited live performance style to the band. Live together, they produce unforgettable performances that lift the soul.’ https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Hall-Brothers-100059938123297/ https://wegottickets.com/event/640472 16th January Singers & Musicians 23rd January The Waite Collective Mal Waite and her two daughters Rebecca Holmes and Katrina Turner, each with an “exceptional” voice, sing with belief and commitment. With a repertoire that is varied, not to say eclectic, their voices seem to blend effortlessly as they take turns to sing the melody and harmony roles. Their obvious enjoyment in singing and performing together spills over to include the audience in the warm rapport they clearly have together. https://www.thewaitecollective.co.uk/ Support tonight from Kath Reade and Colin Speakman A collaboration performance of songs and poems from singer/songwriter Kath Reade and the highly regarded poet Colin Speakman celebrating the North of England, particularly Yorkshire, called Rhythms of Northern Landscapes. The following is an extract from a review of a recent performance of their presentation: Rhythms of Northern Landscapes is an exquisite sequence of story, poetry and song that flows seamlessly from Colin to Kath in alternation. Kath Reade’s voice has the silken quality of Bailey’s Irish Cream. It is heart-warming, beguiling, and with serious depths that tell of a life well-observed and well-lived: the combination of Colin and Kath could be described in the same way. https://www.kathreade.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/ColinSpeakmanAuthor https://wegottickets.com/event/640473 30th January Jez Lowe Over the past four decades, Jez Lowe has been one of the UK’s busiest singer-songwriters, playing for audiences the world over, either solo, (with guitar, cittern, mandolin and harmonica accompaniment), or with his long-time band The Bad Pennies. He has taken his songs of North-East England to concerts and festivals all across Europe, Canada and the USA, as well as building a sizeable following in Australia and New Zealand. Along the way he has gathered a long list of awards and nominations, including from the BBC Folk Awards and the Sony Radio Awards. His pace and enthusiasm for writing, performing and touring shows no sign of waning. Jez Lowe’s self-penned songs are among the most widely sung wherever folk and acoustic music is performed around the world. Over the last couple of decades, the likes of Fairport Convention, The Dubliners, The Unthanks, Wizz Jones, The McCalmans, Mary Black, The Duhks, Bob Fox, The Young Uns, Enda Kenny, Cherish The Ladies, Tom McConville, The Clancys and scores more, have queued up to adopt his songs for their own repertoires. https://www.jezlowe.com/ https://wegottickets.com/event/640475 Joy Leach has submitted the following: Topic Zooms in a New Year. You are invited to join us on Monday January 20th for the first Zoom of 2025. Singers, musicians, poets and audience members are welcome to attend. If you wish to take part, please let us know by Friday Jan 17th The digital doors will open at 7.30 for an 8pm start. As previously, a running order and passcodes will be circulated a day or two beforehand. For anyone wishing to drop-in on the night on the chance of performing, the decision will lie with the MC for the session. To book, please email joy.utistugu.49.5.8@gmail.com My apologies for the cancellation of the December Zoom, due to a throat infection. I'm aware that it was a disappointment for one or two of you. Once again we are grateful to Jim Saville who hosts the sessions, allowing us the use of his Zoom facility. HAPPY NEW YEAR ONE & ALL!
THE TOPIC AND BRADFORD CITY OF CULTURE 2025 The now usual reminder that we are involved in one of the cultural events in the run up to Bradford City of Culture 2025. I'll continue to put the reminder on the newsletters, more people may yet be inspired to submit a song for the project.... See the usual attached updated flyer Songs with a Bradford Accent. This ambitious project is by no means limited to the usual participants in the acoustic music scene: if you know of anyone outside our orbit who might be interested in being involved, please let them know about it, nay, encourage them. It's not a competition, by the way, no winners and losers, just a chance to show what local songwriters can do to honour the city's award. ------------------------------------------ NON-TOPIC STUFF On Monday 6th January 2025 Liz Narey's First Monday Folk welcomes Andrew Metheven. --------------------------------------------------------- TOPIC STUFF We welcome any suggestions for artists you would like to see performing at the club in 2026 (all dates for 2025 are booked!): it's not too early to name your favourite choice for the following year. At the club's AGM held on 5th December the following were re-elected to the committee: Neil Etherington, John Waller, Sue Gaffney, Martin Richards, Rahel Guzelian, Tony Charnock. A reminder that any member can be co-opted to serve on the committee at any time: we welcome new blood, new ideas etc, so please consider putting yourself forward if you would like to be involved with running the club. As most of you will know by now, we now accept (indeed prefer) payment by card, but you can of course pay by cash if that suits you better. Membership of the club runs from 1st January and will entitle you to the lower ticket prices shown in this and future newsletters as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to. You can join or renew your membership on any club night. --------------------------- For performers who may be thinking of approaching the club for a booking, please email: info4topic@gmail.com If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them. The Topic runs on Thursdays at Hullabaloo, 41 Westgate, Shipley, BD18 3QX. Doors will open at 7 pm with a 7.30 pm start and a target time of 10pm to finish. A reminder that freshly prepared food is available at Hullabaloo from 5.30 pm. Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we are hoping we can count on you for your continued support. Floor singers are always welcome (though may be limited if we have a booked support act - please check). Please arrive by 7.15 pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening. Please continue to take Covid precautions when visiting the club. Best wishes to you all for 2025 Tony Charnock Topic Folk Club |
