TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD NEWSLETTER No 80 – September 2008 Greetings: and welcome back from the Festivals, or wherever else you have been spending this most glorious of summers. After an August of (by all accounts) very enjoyable singarounds, it is back to our strong programme of Guest Artists. 4 Sept Roger Davies (Sept 4). Roger has been working his way up the Topic’s performance ladder for a couple of years now: from a singaround turn, through Featured Support and Double Header: and tonight we are pleased to welcome him for his first Topic Headline gig. His uncomplicated and highly professional presentation, plus his witty and direct songs about growing up and life in general in the Calder Valley, have earned him similar gigs all over the country. If you haven’t seen him yet, do come for what is guaranteed to be an enjoyable evening. If you have seen him; then you’ll know anyway. Featured Support will take the form of poetry from John Hepworth; and Roger intends to bring one of his performer friends with him as well. £4 / £5 entry. 11 Sept Bandersnatch (Sept 11). We had one member of Bandersnatch, Ed McGurk, give us one third of a Triple Whammy in July; and we’ve had them all before en masse for a Double Header. So, again, a welcome step up to full Headline Guest status for this multi-member (six, at the last count; now including a female vocalist) multi-instrumental band from across the Pennines, with a repertoire as wide as such a diversity would suggest. Smooth, polished and thoroughly enjoyable. Only £4 / £5 entry. 18 Sept Singers and Musicians (Sept 18). It was to have been yet another former Featured Support act, the very wonderful duo Heather Dale. But she and partner Ben have had to curtail their UK tour, and will now only be appearing in Cornwall. A great pity, as they were a Big Act. But Singers and Musicians evenings are also part of the life blood of the folk scene, so no-one should complain if we have another one. Free entry. 25 Sept A Double Header: YLEM and Notts Alliance (Sept 25). Would you believe it if I told you both these bands had also appeared with us before in Featured Support mode? It’s true. YLEM are a delightful three-member band with a mixture of catchy rhythms, delicate arrangements, and a repertoire combining eastern and western European tunes, songs, chord structures and harmonies; and featuring fiddle, whistles and guitar. Notts Alliance come from where it says on the tin; and provide three-part male a capella harmony with an offering of songs you’ll mostly know; from traditional and contemporary sources. Contrasting styles maybe, but both acts offer a similar rigorously professional standard of performance. £4 / £5 to come in. 02 Oct Singers and Musicians (Oct 02). Back to the “first of the month” singers and musicians pattern. Come and share some more life blood, whether or not you made it on 18 September. Still free entry: though note the almost-obligatory raffle. And ONWARDS: 9 The Amazing Mr Smith Wildly eccentric visual and musical humour 16 Kirsty McGee and Mat Martin Brilliant female songwriter, plus Mat’s guitar 23 Singers and Musicians 30 Bryony Long-standing female close harmony and dulcimer trio See you all some Thursday at the BRADFORD IRIS.H CLUB. 8.30 start. Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half: get down prompt and early if you’d like a slot. Featured Support slots may available throughout the Autumn, primarily for acts we don’t yet know who’d like to showcase their material. But please contact rahel@blueyonder.co.uk, not me.
