TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD NEWSLETTER No 78 – June 2008
Greetings: with news of the June/July line-up at the Topic:
5 June Singers and Musicians We haven’t had one of these for some time, so let’s hope we’ll get a good attendance. It’s all free, apart from the near-obligatory raffle. Sing, play, watch, listen, relax, drink: even chat between songs.
12 June Soundsphere A four-part female a capella harmony group from York, with a polished and eclectic set of songs from round the world. They were very well-received when they came last time, back in the Melborn years. £4 / £5 to come in: MC Simon.
19 June John Conolly If there were ever a Campaign for Real Folk Singers, John Conolly would be the sort of act it would promote. No-nonsense songs of the sea, ships, Lincolnshire/Grimsby, Punch and Judy Men, dirty postcards – all written and sung with honesty and humour. Great to see him again. £4 / £5 entry: MC Simon
26 June Singers and Musicians We had one of these only three weeks ago, but that’s no reason not to come again. It’s still all free, plus raffle as above. It’s earlier than usual, because you-know-who always has the first week in July.
3 July Roger Sutcliffe Yes, it’s him, with his inimitable patter, banter, stories and selection of guitars, on the which he plays an assortment of Blues and related music. You know all this. Come and enjoy one of the Topic’s longest serving regulars and one-time organiser. £4 / £5 entry: MC Ian
10 July Ruth Notman Come and see next year’s emerging talent: the exciting Ruth, still in her teens, but achieving great reviews and support from some of the most established names in the business (Jon Kirkpatrick and Kate Rusby). On her own with guitar and mostly self-penned songs, Ruth has an innocent simplicity of delivery and a superb clear voice. £4 / £5 entry: MC Ian.
AND ONWARDS (as it stands at present)
July 17 The Hall Brothers + John Carey Quality and humour July 24 Triple Whammy: Ed McGurk / Mixing up the Medicine / Friendly Visit July 31 Eddy O’Dwyer with special guest Tony Levy
August Singers and Musicians throughout
See you all some Thursday at the BRADFORD I.RISH CLUB. 8.30 start. Floor singers always welcome, especially in the first half: get down prompt and early if you’d like a slot. Still some Featured Support slots available in June and July, primarily for acts we don’t yet know who’d like to showcase their material. But please contact rahel@blueyonder.co.uk, not me.
