NEWSLETTER No 33 September 2004
Greetings and welcome (belatedly) to the start of the new Topic Season
Sept 9 Jed Grimes Founder member of Bob Fox's band The Hush currently on a solo tour. Another exponent of the flourishing North-Eastern tradition of folk song, presenting a mixture of his own and others' work. Was instrumental in recording a number of songs specifically for the Northumbrian Archive (the original reason for the founding of The Hush). Plays electric and acoustic guitar and bozouki; and sings.
Featured Support this week is from Adrian Nation: an up and coming singer-songwriter from East Anglia who has received tremendous reviews from his performances at festivals and folk clubs in that area. One to watch for the future.
Sept 16 Ron Trueman Border Another artist from further south than usual: this time from Kent. A singer/songwriter whose abilities are becoming noticed over a wider geographic area, and who has been compared to Richard Thompson. I can remember liking the rock and roll influences in his style when first hearing his demo CD certainly an individual voice. A multi-instrumentalist and raconteur to boot.
Featured Support has not been entirely settled as we go to press, but it is out on offer to Paul Pearson from Sheffield; about whom I know little at present.
Sept 23 Singers and Musicians evening. Back to themes for these evenings. This time the theme is FOOD. The challenge will be to find songs which relate to food, but which do not (inevitably) also feature drink.
Sept 30 The Lost Boys. Another visit from Ester, Dave and Ian (lead vocals, steel and acoustic guitars, and fiddle respectively) with their delightfully eclectic range of acoustic folk, blues, country and just about anything else. They have a tendency to absorb passing musicians into the line up, so watch out!
Featured Support tonight is from Lyn Geddes, a traditional singer and acoustic guitarist of real quality from Ripon, who came to an August singaround and delighted us all. Lyn is pencilled in for a Headline spot in 2005, so come and get ahead of the game by seeing her now!
Oct 7 The Queensberry Rules. „Tipping a wink to folk, bluegrass, country and blues whilst wrapping it all up with a skiffle sensibility, their wry lyrical sense, hooks aplenty and perhaps the most striking aspect of all - their watertight harmonies, are all replicated immaculately during their live set‰. [it says on their website].
Featured Support is from Dominic Collins: a comedy singer-songwriter from Manchester way, who'd like to get better known over this side of the Pennines. Welcome!
