TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

Thursdays at the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX
Newsletter No 84 - January 2009

Happy New Year! Hope you're feeling refreshed after the Christmas break and ready to take in new things, perhaps to sample artists you've never seen before or never even heard of.

There's a mixture of familiar and new-to-the-Topic performers this season and hopefully something to suit everyone. Thank you to all the people who supported the Topic on a regular basis last year. We had some good audience turn-out in parts of 2008. Please help this trend to continue.

8th January
David Ferrard. A Scottish/American singer from Edinburgh, who has already impressed Bradford audiences through his appearances at the Raise Your Banners festival (which is again being held in Bradford in November 2009). Catchy melodies and a commitment to social issues, rooted in traditional folk idiom, David recaptures some of the spirit of the 60s folk revival. £5/£6

15th January
A Double Header Evening
. Two high-quality and varied artists for the price of one. Another original Scot (but now based in North Yorkshire), Wendy Arrowsmith is a fine and powerful interpreter of traditional song, and also a prize-winning songwriter. Local band Berkana (Neil Benton, Terry Armitage and Lou Finch) impressed us when they came to the first singaround in the new venue back in March. They provide traditional, contemporary and self-penned material, with or without a multitude of instruments. Double Headers are almost always highly enjoyable: do come. £5/£6

22nd January
Pete Morton. Acclaimed singer/songwriter, whose songs are „an unruly mix of humour, love, politics and social comment, delivered in an energetic and compelling style‰. He'll be singing an assortment of new and old songs. His latest CD is something of a musical world tour, with songs in 10 different languages (including a Welsh translation of his well-known Another Train). £5/£6

29th January
Flossie Malavialle. Originally from France (and with the occasional Edith Piaf song in her wide-ranging repertoire), Flossie has established herself on the UK folk circuit over the six years since she popped across La Manche to teach French for a few months. Expect songs from well-established songwriters in the folk tradition, as well as some from more mainstream artists. £5/£6

5th February
Singers & musicians night. An opportunity for everyone to get together in a fairly informal manner and try out (on an amenable audience) the songs they've been practising, or to sing or play something they've been doing for weeks, months or years. If none of those apply to you why not just come down and listen, or join in the chorus? Free entry

12th February
Janet Russell, who has now worked on the folk scene professionally for more than 20 years. A long overdue visit to the Topic in her busy schedule of teaching, concerts, workshops, and working with community singing groups. As well as an interpretor of traditional Scottish songs she's an experienced songwriter, with stunning vocal ability. £5/£6

And coming later:

February: Landermason, Stanley Accrington

March: Gina Le Faux, Phoenix (Irish Night), Bernie Parry

More details in the February Newsletter or see the website: http://www.topic-folk-club.org.uk

As you might know, John Waller has had to step down from active involvement with the Topic. During his time as organiser, he sent out out at least 83 editions of the newsletter. I am now taking on this task at issue 84. Some of you may be receiving it for the first time. I hope it is of interest to you.

You don't have to be a member to come to the Topic. Everyone is welcome every Thursday at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB. 8.30pm start.

Floor singers always welcome, especially in the first half. Please get down by 8.15pm if you‚d like a slot.
