TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At Glyde House, Glydegate, Bradford BD5 0BQ

Newsletter No 169 - July 2016

Hello all,

Firstly, I'm aware that some of you are receiving these emails late, some possibly not at all. They are all being sent in the normal way, but for some reason Googlemail isn't delivering with its usual efficiency, although I've been sending these newsletters in exactly the same way that I always have done. I'll do all I can to try to resolve the problem, but I venture to suggest that it's a glitch in the system rather than operator error, though of course being somewhat technologically challenged, that can't be ruled out!

Here's the list of what's coming up:

7th  July:  Roger Sutcliffe.
This is Roger’s 53rd year of playing at the Topic: there is very little we can say about him that his army of admirers don’t already know. But for any newcomers to the world of acoustic music Roger stands on his own as ragtime picker extraordinaire,  blues supremo, and singer of songs of those genres. There are invariably a number of guitarists in his audience who have learned their craft first hand from Roger, so whether you pick, play or just listen, get down early for another packed night. £6 (£5)

14th July:  Singers and Musicians. 8.15 pm start. Free entry. NB Second Thursday this month.

21st July:  Robb Johnson.
A perennial favourite at the club with his songs of social comment and observations on all aspects of life.. He is now recognised as one of the finest songwriters working in the UK today, having  played pubs, clubs, pavements, pickets and benefits arts centres and festivals, local radio, with airplay on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and a host of international radio appearances. This will undoubtedly, as always, be a busy night, so come down early. £6 (£5)

The real deal when it comes to songwriting – Mike Harding

An English original – Robin Denselow, The Guardian

Tonight we welcome a support act: Katie Spencer, who is making a name for herself on the eastern side of our county, a young singer/songwriter inspired by the people and her surroundings in the Yorkshire countryside. Enjoying music from a young age has developed her ever-evolving and infinite musical tastes and influences, including John Martyn, Roy Harper and Led Zeppelin.

28th July: Karin Grandal-Park & Rosie Clegg.
A new duo to the Topic, though Rosie has appeared at the club before in various collaborations, namely Five and Dimers.

Karin Grandal-Park and Rosie Clegg combine strong vocals and harmonies to perform original songs (written by Karin) as well as classic versions of traditional and contemporary Folk songs.  Karin and Rosie teamed up 18 months ago and are establishing a name for themselves with performances at a range of Folk Clubs and Festivals in North Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria as well as performing at Costa Del Folk, Portugal in October 2015 and Costa Del Folk, Mallorca in April 2016.  Their first EP was recorded live and produced by Mike Harding who also plays mandolin and acoustic bass on several of the tracks.  Karin comes from a blues/jazz background and discovered her love of Folk Music only 2 years ago.  After 30 years she says 'I have finally found where I belong musically. I had not realised that Folk music was so diverse and as a singer/songwriter it gives me a huge spectrum from which to draw inspiration'. Rosie has been involved in both the Folk scene and Bluegrass scene for 30 years and is well known and respected amongst the Folk community. She contributes a wealth of musicianship playing both guitar and banjo as well as the musical arrangements for the duo's repertoire, and provides strong backing vocals and harmonies to Karin’s compositions. In her solo capacity she performs beautifully crafted covers by such artistes as Nancy Griffiths and Iris Dement.

This is undoubtedly a duo to watch out for and we are delighted to welcome them to the Topic for what will be a very entertaining night to end the season. £6 (£5)

NEWS

KARL DALLAS

The Topic was well represented at Karl's funeral which took place on 30th June. It was a very moving occasion, reflecting Karl's colourful and eventful life, with some very touching observations from his family and friends. The church was full, with people from all backgrounds, exemplifying to the end Karl's ability to bring people together, something he was so successful at during his lifetime. Our thoughts are with Gloria as she now adjusts to her life without this extraordinary man: he will be missed by so many people, locally, nationally and internationally for his charisma, generosity of spirit, the many causes he espoused, and his tireless dedication to fighting injustice, to say nothing of his contribution to folk music in the wider world.

There is a short video clip of parts of the funeral which you can watch by following this link:

Apologies to those who didn't receive notification from me about the time and place of the funeral, this was due to the issues explained at the beginning of this newsletter

TOPIC STUFF

The Topic at The Bradford Festival

As previously mentioned, the Topic will once again have its own stage at this year's Bradford Festival which takes place in the City Park area over the weekend 8th-10th July. The Topic stage will be running on the Sunday 10th July, 2 pm to 5 pm when The Phil Cockerham Trio, Gerry Cooper &  Phil Snell, and Paula Ryan will be entertaining the crowds on our behalf. The location for the Topic performances will be The Temporary Garden Stage. It would be nice to see you there.

Usual stuff

Don't forget the Topic song project for this year's anniversary - see recent newsletters for details. You can contact me, tocharn@gmail.com, if you would like any further information.

For performers who may be thinking of approaching the club for a booking, please note that the bookings organiser is Rahel Guzelian, email address : rahel@guzelian.com

If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just £5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at Glyde House, Glydegate, Little Horton Lane, BD5 0BQ 8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights normally start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half, though may be limited when we have a booked support act - please check. Please try to get there by 8.15 pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
