TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD At Glyde House, Glydegate, Bradford BD5 0BQ Newsletter No. 151 - December 2014 Hello all, Well, here we are, Christmas nearly upon us again, so a bit of a festive note to this newsletter, for a necessarily shortened Topic month... 4th December: Singers and Musicians 11th December: Magical Christmas Tree Tour This is a high-flying combination: a singer/ songwriter extraordinaire, a superb traditional singer and one of the folk scene’s most sought-after instrumentalists. Pete, Emily & Chris all excel in their own departments. Together they deliver a richly textured collection of vibrant new songs, beautiful old carols and stunning instrumentals – plus all three voices in three-part harmony... and they have a great time doing it. Superb acoustic music! Pete Morton: "not only impressive but a revelation......totally original" The Guardian Chris Parkinson: "probably the best accordionist in the world …and he’s touring with us" Pete Morton 18th December: Pat Sherry and Stuart Douglas As usual the Holbeck Mummers will be popping in, and there will possibly a mince pie or two (before you’ve had the chance to get fed up with them!) 25th December: Guess what? Club closed. Please note that we will also be closed on the next Thursday, 1st January 2015. TOPIC NEWS With regard to the Magical Christmas Tree Tour visit to the Topic on 11th December, even up until recently this was advertised as including Maggie Boyle. Sadly, as you will know, Maggie died on 6th November after a long and brave battle against cancer. There was a huge turnout for a memorial day in her memory, it was a a sad occasion of course, but the day turned into an experience that can only be described as uplifting. Maggie was so obviously very much loved and will be very much missed. The new Tyke's News is out and will be available on club nights. Please support this excellent magazine and the team that work so hard to produce it by buying a copy. Usual Other Stuff For performers who may be thinking of approaching the club for a booking, please note that the bookings organiser is now Sue Gaffney, email address: sue.gaffney@btinternet.com If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just £5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to. If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them. The Topic runs on Thursdays at Glyde House, Glydegate, Little Horton Lane, BD5 0BQ 8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support. Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
