TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

Hello to you all,

At the time of writing Spring has fully sprung, glorious weather, record-breaking temperatures, lighter evenings with the promise of those lazy hazy days of summer. But will it last? Can we depend on it, or will winter have a sting in its tail....? One thing we can depend on is the Topic for great weekly entertainment for those interested in good live folk music.

So what has April in store? No cold fronts, no depressions, no high pressure either. Just a settled but mixed forecast.

5th April.  Singers and musicians.
Informal and enjoyable. Some newcomers have become regulars of late. You know who you are, please keep on coming. If you want to be a newcomer you will be most welcome to sing, play or listen. Free entry, 8.15 start.

12th April. Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer.
A fine duo, all the way from Essex, with an array of instruments, including the Swedish nyckelharpa - if that doesn't tempt any waverers down, nothing will. In earlier times Vicki and Jonny were known principally for their instrumental virtuosity, but are now equally respected for their sensitive song arrangements, blending traditional songs and tunes with contemporary interpretations together with original songs and tunes that feel very much at home in the tradtion. A great combination of vocal and instrumental talent. £5/£6

19th April. Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar.
A remarkable duo, new to the Topic. Two young men who are fast establishing themselves on the folk circuit, both separately and together. Greg Russell is a talented 19 year old guitarist, concertina player and singer-songwriter from Chester. He has spent the last few years building quite a name for himself in the North Wales and Cheshire area with high profile support slots for Lau, Karine Polwart, Bella Hardy and Kerfuffle. Ciaran Algar plays fiddle, bodhran and bouzouki in the dynamic young band Tri, who supported top band Lunasa at Saltaire Live last year to great acclaim.  He has to fit his gigs in with his GCSE's which he is taking this year. £5/£6

It's great that we have such young talent coming through on the folk scene and we are delighted to welcome Greg and Ciaran to the Topic.

26th April. Marie Little.
To finish off the month in style, a welcome return for a great favourite. Marie came to the Topic a couple of years ago: before that she was too long off our radar. With her wide repertoire of songs humorous or sad, folk, country or music hall, she sings with warmth, passion and intensity, interspersed with her renowned wit and humour. It's a joy to welcome her back.£5/£6

3rd May. Singers and  Musicians.

And coming later:

May: Leon Rosselson; Dave Ellis and Boo Howard; Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts; Joe Topping

June: Paula Ryan, Brian Peters, Martyn Wyndham-Read

More details in the next newsletter or see http://www.topic-folk-club.org.uk <http://www.topic-folk-club.org.uk/>

If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just £5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
