Hello again everyone. Well, with the Christmas celebrations over, this can be a rather dull time of year. Take a look at what the Topic has on offer to beat those post-Christmas blues and lighten the January gloom.

10th January
Bella Gaffney
Bella Gaffney is a highly talented young singer, songwriter and guitarist from Bradford who has become an increasingly familiar and popular face on the local acoustic music scene. With well-chosen covers and a mixture of folk-based material together with her own thoughtful songs, an evening of quality and variety is guaranteed. Bella recently supported top Irish band Altan at their Saltaire Live concert at Victoria Hall to great acclaim and is making a name for herself in Nottingham where she is presently studying at University. She has performed at the Topic many times at singers nights and as a floor singer on guest nights: we are delighted to welcome her as a guest in her own right for the first time. £5/£6 

17th January
Will Kaufman's presentation on Woody Guthrie's life - "Hard Times and Hard Travelin'"
Something a bit different: a "live documentary" with songs and visual images portraying the life and music of one of folk music's most influential characters.

Will is a local multi-instrumentalist and Professor of American Literature and Culture at the University of Central Lancashire. He has given his presentation at many venues in the UK and America and has been awarded the Woody Guthrie Research Fellowship by the Woody Guthrie Foundation.In 2011 he wrote the first political biography of Guthrie entitled Woody Guthrie, American Radical. His work has been highly praised by such luminaries as Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger and Ralph McTell. £5/£6

24th January
Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn
Steve and Lynn are an acoustic duo who hail from Leicestershire, performing songs and tunes from the British Isles and North American traditions.With outstanding vocals, subtle harmonies and intricate finger-style guitar accompaniment, Their Topic debut promises to be a most entertaining evening. £5/£6

31st January
Wendy Arrowsmith

Wendy is a singer/songwriter/instrumentalist well-known to West Yorkshire audiences (including the Topic) who comes originally from Glasgow but is now living in NorthYorkshire. She is considered to be a fine interpreter of traditional songs and performs a mixture of British folk songs and her own offerings. Over recent years she has won songwriting competitions at Saltburn, Scarborough and Rydale festivals. £5/£6

If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just £5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
