 Hello again everyone,

Well, May Day has finally arrived, so summer will soon be a-comin in - or not! But whatever the season, the prospect of a veritable wealth of talent a-visiting the Topic in the coming month will surely be putting a spring in your step. Take a look at what's in store:

2nd May
Singers and musicians.
8.15 pm start. Free entry. We had  a great night last month - let's keep it on a roll.

9th May
Kyle Carey (USA) and Josienne Clarke with Ben Walker.
Two acts for the price of one: these three fine musicians have joined forces for a recording session and a UK tour, hence the double bill. Kyle, having spent her early years in Alaska, has travelled widely and studied Gaelic language and song: her repertoire includes songs of the American Folk Anthology, with influences of Irish, Scottish and Cape Breton music, and the Appalachian poetry of Louise McNeill. Josienne, (FATEA Female Vocalist of the Year 2012) and Ben, who plays steel and nylon strung guitars and mandolin, have released two CD's, one of traditional songs and one of original material. They were winners of the 2012 Isambard Folk Award. £6/£5

16th May
Steve and Ruth Smith (USA)
From the Blue Ridge mountains, not of Virginia but North Carolina, Steve and Ruth bring their traditional tunes, Appalachian songs, Celtic melodies and original compositions on hammered and Appalachian mountain dulcimers, guitar and old-time clawhammer banjo. Steve is an award-winning songwriter who has a Master's degree in Appalachian Studies with the emphasis on the music and folklife of the region. Their partnership has lasted 35 years during which time they have travelled extensively in different parts of the world as cultural representatives of the Appalachian region. £6/£5

23rd May
Reg Meuross
A warm welcome back for Reg, who gave us a wonderful night on his last visit to the club. Described by Mike Harding as " one of the finest songwriters this country has produced " his songs and delivery, accompanied by his understated but intricate guitar playing, mark Reg out to be an outstanding performer. With a string of successful CD's already released, Reg is currently bringing his latest offering Leaves and Feathers to live audiences across the country. His songs offer an understanding of the perspectives of the human condition to which we can all relate. £6/£5

30th May
James Hickman and Dan Cassidy
James is no stranger to the folk music scene,having been performing in the genre from the age of 13. Familiar to Saltaire Live audiences as part of the duo Hickman and Quinn, he also  played in the popular folk group Uiscedwr for two years. Dan, brother of the late Eva Cassidy, hails from Maryland USA: he has been playing fiddle from the age of 10 and became interested in  Celtic music and the UK folk scene in general after meeting up with Aly Bain. Dan plays regularly throughout the UK with his own band: he also played on several of his late sister's recordings. £6/£5

Singing Workshop and Concert at the Bradford Irish Club

As you probably know by now the Topic is organising a singing workshop run by York-based all-female a capella group Soundsphere, followed by an evening concert on 15th June.

Tickets are available for this event. Prices are as follows:

Workshop and Concert £12

Workshop only             £10

Concert only                £6 (Topic members £5)

The workshop will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm and the concert will start at 7 pm.

The purpose of running this event is to try to bring something new to those interested in what is the broad spectrum of folk music: it also allows the club to step outside it's comfort zone of just running club nights. If it's successful, we'll hopefully be able to host more different events in the future. So we hope we will get plenty of support. Please tell your friends about it.

If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just £5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
