Hello again,

Well, summer (?) is nearly gone, the nights are drawing in, so let’s hope the Topic can draw you in on Thursday nights with some excellent acoustic music for your delight. Here’s what’s on offer:

 6th September. Roger Davies.
One of the most entertaining acoustic singer/songwriters on the folk music scene with his personable portraits of Yorkshire places and people. There will no doubt be a mixture of old favourites and new offerings  (Roger has a new CD out this year), and those new to the Roger Davies Experience can be sure that an excellent night is in prospect. This evening promises to be a bit special in another way: the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Dale Smith, is planning to visit the club as part of his declared mission to sample the great variety of cultural clubs/organisations that exist in Bradford. There will be the minimal of formality, he will see the club as it is, and his interest is much appreciated.

 13th September. Jaywalkers.
Vocals, guitars, fiddle and bass make up this trio new to the Topic which has been described as one of the most exciting and entertaining young bands on the UK folk scene. Having been finalists in the BBC Young Folk Awards (2009) they have gone from strength to strength and become regular performers at festivals throughout the UK.Their CD 16 Miles has received rave reviews.

20th September. Anna Elias and the Forlorn Hope.
Another band making their Topic debut, this 4-piece (vocals, guitars, cello) hail from the rural Midlands. They write and perform songs influenced by the surrounding landscapes, incorporating elements of traditional and contemporary folk.

 27th September. Gren Bartley.
Gren last appeared at the Topic as part of a duo with the excellent fiddle player Tom Kitching. Now striking out as a solo performer, Gren is gaining recognition as a fine songwriter, singer and guitarist. His songs explore a wide range of styles from traditional English to American blues ballads.

Coming in October: David Gibb & Elly Lucas; Fiona Katie-Roberts with Eddie Lawler (Double Header); Alistair Russell.

Calling all those with artistic inclinations: the committee wants to produce a backcloth for the club, probably about 8’ x 4’ (I’m showing my age here).  Anyone with any ideas for making it look artistically relevant, please get in touch.

IMPORTANT.  It’s coming up to about a year since the Topic’s founder, Alex Eaton,  passed away and the committee would like to mark the anniversary by having a tribute night in his memory. So on 1st November, which is a singers/musicians night, it would be good if anyone who knew him, has stories to tell about him, would like to sing some of his favourite songs, or has had any connection with him could come along and help make it  a special night. If you can think of anyone who might be interested, but might not be involved with the club any more or receive this newsletter, please let us know, or else pass it on to the person concerned. We are hoping that Louise and other members of the family will be coming to this event. If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just £5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
