SPECIAL NEWSLETTER 22 AUGUST 2019 Hello everyone, As most of you will know, the Topic Folk Club is once again having to move to a new venue. Glyde House is closing: and the final Topic event there will be the Singers and Musicians session tonight, 22nd August. Our new location will be The Merchant Bar, 25 Peckover Street, Bradford BD1 5BD This is in Little Germany, a Conservation Area in central Bradford, of great historical and architectural interest. With its iconic Victorian architecture, it’s a flourishing commercial district, with over 100 small businesses employing 3,000 staff. Old mill buildings have been renovated into attractive city centre accommodation and office space. Best of all, it is already a recognised arts hub, hosting the Bradford Playhouse, Sunrise Radio, and occasional arts festivals. The Topic will fit in well here. Our first Guest Artist will be The Hall Brothers + John Carey, on Thursday 5th September. Great to start at our new home with a popular local act that’s been involved with folk music round Bradford for many years. The Merchant Bar is open to the public from 1130-2300 Monday to Saturday. But on Thursday evenings, it will be reserved for the exclusive use of the Topic Folk Club from 1800 onwards – ensuring that only Topic members and paying guests will be using its facilities when we have a booked act. It has a well-stocked cellar with draught (keg) beers, lagers and ciders; wines, spirits and soft drinks, plus tea / coffee. The proprietors, Dawn and Claire, are very much looking forward to welcoming us. Any change in venue brings its own challenges. Glyde House was excellent for us in so many ways; and it’s a great pity it’s closing. None of the 20+ venues we considered – many suggested by yourselves: thanks! - has been able to match every feature we enjoyed there. Space in The Merchant Bar will be a little more limited, for example; and it may take a week or so for us to find the best seating arrangements. But we are confident The Merchant Bar will provide an exciting, stimulating and satisfying experience: for all our current audience members, and all the new people we can attract. Practicalities: The Merchant Bar is situated in the bottom right hand corner of the Enterprise Hub – a prominent building on Peckover Street. It’s about 10 minutes’ walk from the Interchange and the Hall Ings bus stops – just up Chapel St from the Playhouse, and left at the top. Car parks are available on Burnett Street about 100m away (£1 from 1800-midnight), and a Private car park on the corner of Peckover Street and Chapel Street, which Topic attendees will be able to use. We hope to have official Permits available soon – until then, just leave a note in your windscreen. On-street parking is complicated (read the notices!): but most of it should be OK after 2000. There is unloading space and parking, for booked artists and disabled users only, immediately outside the venue. The entire bar area has level access, with excellent toilet facilities, including a dedicated disabled toilet. The Topic Website www.topic-folk-club.org.uk will have detailed maps and access routes as soon as we can get these organised. Please spread the word about The Merchant Bar. Come and check us out during September! The Autumn edition of Tykes News has already been printed listing the old venue - nothing we can do about that. But you can help by letting everyone know about the change! Best wishes Tony Charnock Topic Folk Club PS – the Singers and Musicians evening scheduled for 29th August cannot go ahead at Glyde House. We will meet at The Merchant Bar, but this session may well involve experimenting with room layout to work out how best our future S/M sessions can be managed. |
