TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD
NEWSLETTER No 31 Early July 2004
Greetings and welcome to a brief reminder of what is afoot the next couple of weeks or so
July 8 Touchwood Do come and see them. We had a great audience in last week for Roger Sutcliffe (and a great night too). Of course, people know Roger and his music, and will come for what they know. You won‚t know Touchwood, because they have just come all the way from Sydney and we haven‚t had them before. There are three of them, and their material is eclectic: mostly unaccompanied (with wonderful harmony arrangements), but with some input on lute, bodhran, guitar and vihuela; and a nice line in medieval songs. Now, I haven‚t seen them either; but their website sounds excellent.
Featured Support will be from Codarajo, the nearest the Topic has to a resident band, (Rahel, Joy and Ryan) with some new material I hear they have been working on.
July 15 Hamish Currie. Versatile singer and guitarist, and MC of the Chesham Folk Club; who was last with us a couple of years ago. This will be a quiet and thoughtful evening, with much to enjoy. Hamish comes to us fresh from recent appearances at Priddy, Middlewich and Crawley Festivals; and is looking forward to returning to the Topic as his previous visits have been hugely enjoyable. In addition, this will be the tenth anniversary of the Topic relocating to the Melborn from the Peel something to celebrate there!
Featured Support is Janet Wood, singer/guitarist performing mostly her own material much influenced by 60s icons Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, coming back to the folk scene.
July 22 Stony Keyboards, acoustic guitar, stunning harmonies: this duo is one of the hottest properties on the acoustic music scene (it says on their website). A heady mix of Jazz and Blues, as well as (mostly) their own material. Banoffi said they were good too, so there‚s a tribute indeed.
Featured Support from Karen and Colin Thompson, who provide delightful traditional songs (Karen) accompanied with classically-trained guitar (Colin).
July 29 Double Header: Chris Manners and Fountainhead. Chris Manners is a long-established and original singer/songwriter, mostly in the modern idiom, but with excellent guitar technique. Fountainhead are an exciting young duo: Tom Stupple on guitar, and Bethany Dowsett with a tremendous voice, doing their own highly original material. Come and round off our season in style!
See you all some Thursday at the Melborn at one of the above events. 8.30 start. Be there by then if you want to perform a floor spot, which are still available every night even where there is a Featured Support artist booked. No smoking.
